ALYA Members Clean-Sweep WLCU Worldwide Contest

ALYA members Elie Khalil, Mounir Kiwan and Mike Helal achieved the top 3 positions in the WLCU worldwide contest targeting youth from Lebanese descent. The results were announced at the recent WLCU world congress held in Sao Paolo (Brazil) from May 25-27, 2007. Congratulations to all the winners:

First Place: Elie Khalil (Melbourne, Australia): US$1000.00
Second Place: Mounir Kiwan (Melbourne, Australia): US$500.00
Third Place: Mike Helal (Melbourne, Australia): US$400.00
Fourth Place: Elise Yazbeck (Paris, France): US$300.00
Fifth Place: Abdo Coury (Los Angeles, USA): US$300.00
Six Place: Rana Hachem (Paris, France): US$300.00

Each winner also received a CD about the History of Lebanon, as a gift from Leebosoft.

ALYA Rockets Do It Again
The final of the Brunswick division 1 indoor soccer league, held on Monday 23rd April 2007, saw the ALYA rockets stage a miraculous come-from-behind victory to win their second title. After finishing fourth in the regular season and defeating the top-ranked team 9-5 in the semi-final played the previous week, the rockets were in with a great chance to successfully defend the title that they won the previous season. However, the opposing team had defeated the rockets in their two previous encounters and the trend was set to continue with ALYA 1-3 down at halftime....More
Lebanon’s Nidal Asmar Shoots the Perfect Score to Equal the World Record
Lebanon’s Olympic trap shooter Nidal Asmar has written himself into the world record books by shooting a perfect 125/125 in the men’s trap at the 2007 Australia Cup held at the Melbourne Gun Club on February 10th-11th. Asmar now joins a list of just six shooters in history who have previously been able to accomplish such a flawless performance and becomes the only Lebanese sportsman to have ever held a world record. An Australian citizen and resident, Asmar also broke the previous Australian record of 124/125 set by Michael Diamond at the Atlanta Olympic Games.....More

DANIA Dabliz has clocked up many milestones since migrating to Australia from Lebanon three years ago.

First there was becoming an Australian citizen, then being accepted into a civil engineering course at Victoria University, all while dedicating her time to nine community organisations around her Broadmeadows home.....More
Magida El Roumi strikes in Sydney!!
The Lebanese diva Magida el Roumi sung in Sydney on the 9th of December 2006. She sung for Lebanon with the Lebanese people from all around Australia, London and France. She left Beirut at the worst time and decided to sing for Beirut “Ya Beirut Ya Sit il Dounia” along with the expatriates. It was amazing and words can’t explain what a concert it was. She sung for more than 2 hours along with more than 2000 Lebanese expatriates. Being there made you proud to be Lebanese. All the way from Sydney – Australia, God bless Lebanon….. Viva Libnan!!!.....More

ALYA Rockets Propel To Victory In Brunswick Division 1 Indoor Soccer Championships
After winning a close semi-final the previous week, the ALYA Rockets indoor soccer team faced very strong opposition in the final that was held on Monday 27th November, 2006. The opponents were an undefeated team that had comfortably defeated the ALYA Rockets in the only previous encounter between the two sides.
The first half was a tight struggle with no goals scored in the opening 10 minutes. Just when the Rockets looked like scoring, a counter-attack by the opposition led to the first goal of the match....More
Nazih El-Asmar Elected as First Lebanese Born Victorian Parlimentarian in Australia
At the recent Victorian state parliamentary elections held on Saturday 25th November, 2006, Mr. Nazih Elasmar created history by being elected as the first Lebanese born Victorian parliamentarian in Australia. Representing the Australian Labour Party, Elasmar was elected as an Upper House member for the Northern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. Elasmar’s success was part of a larger triumph for the Australian Labour Party, who were lead to victory by another Lebanese-Australian, Premier Steve Bracks....More
