ALYA ROCKETS DO IT AGAIN |
The final of the Brunswick division 1 indoor soccer league, held on Monday 23rd April 2007, saw the ALYA rockets stage a miraculous come-from-behind victory to win their second title. After finishing fourth in the regular season and defeating the top-ranked team 9-5 in the semi-final played the previous week, the rockets were in with a great chance to successfully defend the title that they won the previous season.
However, the opposing team had defeated the rockets in their two previous encounters and the trend was set to continue with ALYA 1-3 down at halftime. Matters only got worse for the rockets when the opposition scored early in the second half, jumping to a 4-1 lead. With ten minutes left on the clock, the rockets suddenly came to life, with an amazing three-goal run in the space of five minutes to level the scores at 4-4. With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match was tied and taken to sudden death extra-time, where a golden goal would instantly decide the game.
The opening of extra-time was very intense with both sides showing great determination and desperation. The rockets attacked very positively and won a corner about two minutes into extra-time. A well-worked series of passes resulted in a wonderful team goal and sealed the match, handing the rockets a 5-4 victory and a successful defence of their title.
